Two recurring activities that I do quite often are making backups of my hass.io system and update to the latest version of hass.io.
My strategy is to update to a new version as soon as one is available to see if any bugs are introduced that affects my system. If I would wait until a number of new updates have been released it would be much more difficult for me to know in which version the bug was introduced.
Upgrading is easy and is done within the hass.io web interface > left menu > hass.io > dashboard > update. I usually take a look at the release notes to see if there is something particular that would affect my system.
Before upgrading I always take backups of my system to be able to revert if the upgrade for any reason does not proceed as expected. I do backups in two different ways; a manual copy of all files in the \\192.168.1.242\config\ directory and a snapshot.
I do the manual copy through Samba from my Raspberry to my computer and then up to my cloud storage. The snapshot is done through the hass.io web interface > left menu > hass.io > snabshots > create. It will take some time before the snapshot is created, do not browse away from the page while the snapshot i being created.
The snapshot file can be found at \\192.168.1.242\backup.
